The Soundtrack.

Like a lot of people I have an MP3 player inside of my head.  Any part of any day can trigger a melody in my head, while certain melodies can greatly effect the outcome of my day.  Here, I can document (more efficiently than with Artist of the Day) every song I feel like making a note of.

Lyrics hat speak to my life right now...

" So Can I get a Window Seat
Don't want nobody next to me
I just want a chance to fly
A chance to cry and a long bye-bye"

-E. Badu, "Window Seat"

Music does heal. Yesterday, my sister (nine years my senior) called me.  She had a lot to tell me, a lot to get off her back, and a lot to be upset about.  We talked, as we've always talked.  However, it was my perusing of Youtube and Pandora that really seemed to stir her mood.  "What's that?" she questioned, hearing something familiar in the background.  "Turn it up," she kept demanding as After 7 or Frankie Beverly began to lift her spirits.

After 2 hours of random New Edition and MC Hammer's "Too Legit" she seemed right as rain.  With some songs, its not just simply the lyrics being good, or that dope-ass beat.  In those two hours, we were kids again with no cares of work, men, or money.  She always did the Hammer dance better than me, but it was good times.
Emotional Cure-All:

So there's a new series on TV1 or Centric (one of those 'Black' Channels) called Unsung.  Each episode highlights the life, accomplishments and impact of different artists who were somehow forgotten.  The show has paid tribute to icons like Tammy Terrell, Miki Howard, & George Clinton.
This got me to thinking about all the random artists I love, the stacks of CD's my father never really could manage to organize.  My parents are "If it sounds good" people.  Basically, if it sounds good, they're going to listen to it. As a result, I grew up loving everything, always slow to hear new popular songs because I was too busy listening to Roger & Zapp and Paul Hardcastle.

I think things through differently and I think that has a lot to do with all this music in my head gone unheard by the masses.  The music I enjoy in the club or on the radio is very different from what I buy, from what I put on to clean the house, or cook my man dinner.

So watching this, Unsung I start to tally up all the artist I love that I can hardly talk to people about.  For instance, anybody remember Remy Shand?  I firmly believe this guy just came out too soon.  He's a sweet crooner who certainly keeps up with the likes of Maxwell, Robin Thicke, Musiq (another "unsung" artist).  Had his fist single been released in 2009 as opposed to 2002... all I'm saying is look out Adam Lavine, look out Robin Thicke.

Some people just don't get enough credit.

Other neglected artists/groups:

Tevin Campbell
After 7
Roger & Zapp
(because really... T Pain needs to come clean)
 Soul 4 Real
Pink
(because if she doesn't get another Grammy I'm going to shoot someone)

Songs I always forget that I love.

A Sentimental Mood - John Coltrane
"The One that Got Away" - PINK
Man's World - James Brown
Dandelion - Tevin Cambell
I Need Love - Robin Thicke
Put That On Everything - Brandy
